What Are We Using To Help?
The following solutions help optimise the abundance of solar power in these parts of the world.
Classroom Solution
Using a locally-sourced car battery, a solar panel and between 38 to 50 LED bulbs we can connect up a maintenance-free lighting solution that can power an entire classroom block [consisting of three classrooms and one office].
We say maintenance-free because, once installed, nothing should need maintaining on a regular basis. We expect the car battery to last around 7 years and with the solar panel and LEDs to last beyond 25 - 30 years.
Shoe Box
A portable ‘Shoe Box’ style case with the battery and 2 lights stored within. The battery is charged by an external solar panel giving up to 24 hours of light. It enables teachers who live on site to charge the box at a Charging Station - within, say, the Head Teachers office. This enables them to bring the lights into school to charge, securely, during the day. The teachers then take them at the end of the day back to their homes or classrooms when they need them.
In this way, the school maintains ownership of the boxes on behalf of their teachers.
The LED bulbs are connected by long cables allowing them to be stretched out across a larger space if required. Provides enough light for a personal space or office. This is an ideal solution for teachers’ homes or small offices where the work of an education administrator is carried out. this solution could also be used for lighting dormitories in the evening if required.
Suitcase
A highly portable solar-powered lighting solution with a small solar panel fixed on the inside of the suitcase lid. Stores enough power for two LED bulbs to last 24 hours - packed into a suitcase, provides enough light for a personal space or office. This is an ideal solution for teachers’ homes or small offices where the work of an education administrator is carried out.
Generator
A solar-powered generator can be used to operate more power-hungry facilities like computers.
